A vacant restaurant site near Francis Scott Key Mall will be transformed into a Tilted Kilt sports bar by late summer.
Mark Hanby, vice president of development for the Tilted Kilt chain, said the demographics of Frederick are a significant reason for locating at 5605 Spectrum Drive. The site had most recently been Tendo Buffet.
Hanby said the Tempe, Ariz.-based company has been looking at Frederick for about a year, holding out for the right site.
Construction should start in early April and opening is slated for July or August, Hanby said. “We definitely want to get in before football season starts.”
The 5,500-square-foot restaurant should hire 120 to 130 employees. The decor will be Scottish, Irish and English, and servers will wear kilts in an exclusive tartan.
“Think classy and sexy, but sexy fun, sexy smart,” Hanby said.
“Our core (customer base) is late 20s to 30s, some college education, mostly men, but we have a lot of ladies, too” as customers, Hanby said.
The restaurant will serve 24 beers, many of them craft beers, and patrons can view sports events on 70- and 80-inch high-definition TVs.
“What differentiates us is our menu,” Hanby said. “It is not just pub grub, but we have appetizers, entrees, pizza, salads.”
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends, and 11 a.m. to midnight through the week.
Hanby said the company works with the military, raising funds for charities that benefit military personnel and families. Some of the more than 95 Tilted Kilts in the U.S. and Canada are near military bases, Hanby said.
“We’ve been opening stores every month,” Hanby said. “By the end of 2014, we will open 27 new Tilted Kilts.”
A look at the menu at tiltedkilt.com shows items including beer cheese soup made with Guinness Stout, Gaelic chicken with Irish cream sauce, Dublin Irish stew, shepherd’s pie and flatbread pizza.
