Tilted Kilt sports bar plans to open Gonzales restaurant

Tilted Kilt, a chain of Irish-Scottish-English-themed sports bars, hopes to open its first Louisiana location in Gonzales in early 2017. The restaurant, which is near the Interstate 10/La. 30 intersection in front of Cabela’s, is “in the throes of permitting,” said Mark Hanby, senior vice president of franchise development for Tilted Kilt. Hanby said the goal is to open four Tilted Kilts across south Louisiana over the next five years. He’s working with potential franchisees and would like to see a restaurant open in either Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond or Slidell by the end of 2017. New Orleans locations also are being considered. “There’s a great tradition for hometown sports with the Saints, the Pelicans and, of course, the Tigers,” Hanby said. Plus, metro Baton Rouge and New Orleans have lots of men 35 to 55, who make up the core demographic for Tilted Kilt. Each restaurant will have about 100 to 150 employees, based on size. Tilted Kilt, which is based in Arizona and has about 100 locations across the U.S. and Canada, is in the same “breastaurant” category as Hooters and Twin Peaks. All of the eateries feature waitresses in skimpy outfits, dozens of draft beers on tap, big-screen TVs tuned to sports and menus with dishes such as wings, quesadillas and burgers. But Hanby said there are some things that make Tilted Kilt different, including the quality of its audio-visual setup and food. “Our menu is unsurpassed in its category,” he said. “We’re making sauces, making marinara. We’re not just putting stuff in the deep-fryer. … It’s a little bit better food experience.” Some of Tilted Kilt’s signature dishes include grilled salmon, shepherd’s pie and Irish nachos, which are kettle chips cooked at the restaurant and topped with melted cheese, seasoned ground beef and tomatoes. “It’s not just pub fare, it’s good food,” Hanby said.
